Atlanta is blessed with ample space, a warm climate and terrific local food initiatives. Promoting efforts to grow food locally can stimulate the economy of underserved communities, create jobs, improve access to fresh produce, and become an economic engine for the city and the region. There is nothing to lose and everything to gain by promoting community gardens and urban farms in Atlanta.
Amir's Solutions
Amir Farokhi will:
- promote a citywide urban agriculture initiative to feed the demand of neighborhoods and local restaurants.
- invite local and national organizations to hold a metropolitan Atlanta roundtable to help define a "foodshed" for the Atlanta region and develop a plan for creating a market for locally grown food and a food access plan for the metro region.
- work to allow under-utilized parkspace to be made available for community farming.
- work with Atlanta Public Schools to include organic and locally-grown produce in cafeterias.
